Artist Bio
Xia Chengwei was born in 1994 in Chengdu, Sichuan, China. She currently works and lives between London and China. Chengwei earned a Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies with First Class Honors from The University of Hong Kong in 2016, as well as an MA Fine Art with Distinction from The Slade School of Fine Art in 2022. In 2023, she completed “The Drawing Year” at The Royal Drawing School.

Artist Statement
My practice moves through drawing, painting, writing, and the making of things.
I am drawn to embodied ways of knowing, knowledge rooted in place, and feminine, yin-centered epistemologies—systems that have long overlapped and intertwined.
I hail from a village of red clay soil in Sichuan, in the southwest of China. The local natural environment, agrarian rhythms, and shamanic belief systems have deeply shaped how I sense, remember, and create.
I am currently working on a novel about ancestral memory and diasporic experience, blending memoir, fiction, and shamanic storytelling. Writing, for me, is an act of naming, of calling, of healing.
